BEST Kahoona 13.5 – Rider Review

Over Labor Day weekend of 2009 I talked with Bob, because I was looking to get a new Best kite and was torn between the Kahoona and the Waroo. I had been struggling for 3 summers with the kite I had and never really felt confident with it and still had not actually been up on the water except one time and that was with a borowed kite. Bob convinced me that I should get the Kahoona due to its easy relaunching and handling and the red bar safety system. Sounded to me as if that was exactly what I needed. So, at the end of September I drove out to Nebraska and picked up the 13.5 Kahoona. Bob took me to the lake to show me how the kite handles and its safety system. After we got to the lake the wind was blowing only 5mph, so I thought, there goes the kite flying. To my amazement Bob showed me how to launch, fly and land the Kahoona in 5mph winds. I was stunned and also convinced of the stability of the kite. The next day was the real test. We had 15-20mph winds and Bob took me out and we did some body dragging and a lot of kite handling training for an hour. At the end of the hour I had just gotten up on the board, but was too tired to continue, must have been my age of 62, and was going to rest awhile and go out again, but fortunately we did quit because the wind turned to onshore at 20-25mph and not good for any lessons. I was convinced of the stability and safe handling of the Kahoona. Ok, the kite was the perfect fit for me, but the instructions from Bob were beyond professional. Bob was very patient and conveyed perfectly the instructions that I needed and would keep repeating the instructions with patience until this old man could finally GET IT. The good news is that after 1 sessions on my own I am up and moving on the water. It goes to show that when you have great instructions and the right kite everything comes together so much more smoothly. I can also attest that John also had the same instruction style as Bob, because he had taken me out behind the jetski for some boarding and after 4 tries I was up and skimming across the water. Thanks guys for a great 2 days of training and look forward to kiteboarding with you all again at lake Mac.
